“Nancy, thank you, thank you for the great tour of the sculptures yesterday.  Please send my thanks to Sally and Maggie also.  The group was so impressed with you three and the wonderful art.  The transformation of the entire River Market area makes me so proud that Little Rock and Arkansas has some forward thinking people who make important things happen.  So again, thank you.  I look forward to seeing you again!”  –  Maribeth Garrison, Road Scholar tour guide

Nancy Puddephatt, one of Sculpture at the River Market’s docents, along with Sally Jones and Maggie Koone lead yet another educational group tour for “Road Scholars.” Road Scholar is a non-profit organization headquartered in Boston with offices all over the U. S, the U. K., and Australia. Their mission is to provide educational travel experiences for life long learners. They are one of the world’s largest innovators of experiential learning opportunities.

Nancy shared the following about the tour; this is just one example of how a tour can be structured:

“Through our website, Road Scholar contacted Sculpture at the River Market (SATRM) and requested a docent tour for March 28, 2017. Working with their tour leaders, SATRM docents planned a tour that fit the group’s schedule. The Road Scholar group spent the morning at the Clinton Presidential Center and had lunch while there at “42”.  After lunch they walked along the Sculpture Promenade and joined the SATRM docents at Sandy Scott’s sculpture, “To Market, To Market”, i.e. the River Market pig.

The docents took them along the river trail taking in the Quapaw Line and the sculptures along the riverfront. This brought the group into the rose garden where they were given a brief history of the Vogel Schwarz Sculpture Garden. The group spent the rest of their time exploring the Vogel Schwarz Sculpture Garden and learning about some of the art and the artists. The tour ended at Mark Leichliter’s “Through the Looking Glass” where the group could look out at the Arkansas River and consider the artist’s statement about the personal interaction between a work of art and the individual viewer as they saw themselves reflected in the polished mirrored surfaces of the sculpture.

The group then proceeded to the Old State House for a tour. The Road Scholar tour group was made up of people from all over the country. We had visitors from California, Ohio, New York, just to name a few of the states represented. Spending time in Riverfront Park among the beautiful pieces of art was a wonderful way to introduce them to Little Rock and our state. SATRM will be conducting another docent tour for Road Scholar on April 25, and they have two upcoming fall tours in which they have requested us to take part.”  – Nancy Puddephatt, Docent
